Columbus Day History
Columbus Day is celebrated on October 12 to commemorate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first arrival to America.
Craft
Making edible sail boats for Columbus Day is not only an excellent project for kids but also fun snacks. These are made simply by using toothpicks, sliced apples, and a slice of cheese cut in the shape of a triangle.
Columbus Day Party Favors
An excellent idea for Columbus Day party favors would be miniature boats of ships.
Party Games
Games such as “Whose Balloon is Bigger” and “Guess the Year” make for great entertainment.
Columbus Day Party Invites
Stationary with ships as well as maps and even cards with pictures of the ocean on it are often used as party invitations.
Party Location
Since Columbus Day is all about Christopher Columbus discovering the Americas, an excellent location to throw a party would be on a beach.
Columbus Day Costumes
Back when Columbus sailed the mighty seas there were other explorers who prided themselves on pirating, Dressing in pirate attire would make for a great costume idea.
Party Banners
Fun themed banners are sure to bring the party to life. They can have a pirate theme, or they can be in fun shapes which depict the Bahamas where Columbus first made land.
Party Supplies
While Columbus Day may not get the recognition in which it deserves it goes without saying that there is an abundant supply of pirate and ocean party supplies. Cups and paper plates with pirate treasure maps on them are great for this occasion.
Party Foods
Don airs are often served at Columbus Day parties because they are on authentic Spanish dish and Christopher Columbus was after all a Spaniard.
Party Songs
Nancy Schimmel’s song “1492” is always a party hit at any Columbus Day party, just as Ben Stiefel’s song “The Nina, The Pinta, The Santa Maria” all are.
Party Balloons
Balloons in shapes of ships make for excellent decor for Columbus Day. As Columbus Day gets near you should try and get the family together for some food and games. You should have the snacks and appetizer in Columbus Day plates, these plates and bowls can be decorated with the American Flag or simply with red, white and blue colors. As for the favors you can give the guest some goodie bags with confetti and many different candies.
